Cabins On Bigelow Bay – An Accessible Mountain Retreat

Live It! Love It! were the lucky recipients of an invitation to the “Cabins On Bigelow Bay” in New Denver, BC last week. The cabins, owned and operated by Isy Schumann and her husband Helmut are the result of a seven year vision to create a wheelchair accessible retreat, that provides access to the wilderness and natural majesty  of the Monashee Mountains and Slocan Lake.

Upon our arrival we were blown away by how truly accessible the accommodation was… from front dial stoves, to low grade switchback path down towards the lake..to the beautifully tiled wheel- in showers… Built from the trees that were on the property before building Isy had not missed a beat in the design of her cabins.

We spent the evening eating the fresh fruit and cheese that was there waiting for us and watching the sun set over the lake.

After a traditional German meal in our bellies, a deep sleep and of a tray of eggs, sausages and homemade biscuits at the door the next morning, we were pretty sure we were in paradise.

Not only is Isy an excellent cook and caretaker, her passion for equality and access to the healing wilderness of her small town of New Denver was evident as she toured us around town, down to the beach and through the community gardens. Isy is an incredible advocate for people with disabilities and accessibility, a rarity in small mountain villages such as New Denver.
